My sister gave this puzzle to my 3-year-old and within the first day the graphic was peeling off of at least half of the pieces under supervised use. I guess now "hand-crafted" is just marketing rhetoric.

Thumbs up to all Melissa and Doug wooden puzzles. They are fun, interesting, durable and educational! My 3 year old daughter wants to work her Melissa and Doug puzzles time and time again! She recieved her first one when she was 2. She has worked it so many times I think every family member knows it by heart and yet it barely shows any signs of wear! Even after pieces have been thrown around and chewed on! EXCELLENT. Wonderfully made.

We have many Melissa and Doug puzzles. Lately, though, I've been getting the more "complicated" puzzles for our autistic child, and the picture peels off the plywood BEFORE she begins to play. In several of the earlier purchases, I'd thought it was our fault. Not this time. The paper tore as I separated the pieces. Is the quality dropping in the Melissa and Doug line, or is it that the more pieces there are in the puzzle, the more poorly the laminate adheres? Either way, I am disappointed, and will be returning this item. Poor hippo. He lost his mouth and grassy snacks.

Vibrant animal puzzle Feb 27, 2010
This is a beautiful animal puzzle with large chunky wood pieces. I purchased this for my 2 1/2 year old twins who both enjoy building it. The large wood pieces are very durable and easy for little hands to use. It also comes with a wooden tray to make building easier. This toy is a favorite and pulled out by my girls daily.

In general I am positive about this toy - its a good thickness, the pictures are recognisable and fun bright colours. After one or two goes of doing it together, my almost 3 year old can do this by herself now which makes her happy. However, the cuts of the wood were not perfect which made the puzzle difficult to get apart the first time and there was a couple of places the picture coating tore. It means they can be hard to get back together again if they arent lined up just so. We have the dinosaur one of the same series but had no problem with it so maybe we got a dud.
