 Throw away the markers Jul 28, 2010
My daughter got this for her birthday a few days ago. She's been playing with it nonstop, so I think it does have great entertainment value. However, the markers are not washable nor does the package state that the markers are permanent or provide any kind of washing instructions. I assumed since this is a toy for kids, that the markers would be washable. If I had known they weren't, I would have made her wear a smock and play with them at the table. She ruined a $20 princess nightgown and Gymboree shirt and her baby sister got a hold of one of them and decorated the chair. I'm going to replace the markers with washable ones for now. But I would advise anyone considering this product to immediately throw away the markers. The birthday set has the same entertainment value without the mess. We have that one and they've been playing with it for over a year now.

I bought this cupcake set for my daughter to enjoy with her kitchen for her 3rd birthday. Out of all the different food type toys that I bought for her kitchen, she has enjoyed this cupcake set the most. The attachment of the candles with Velcro is a little precarious, but overall it works! It is a worthwhile purchase and I would recommend it.

This play set was such a perfect product for us. I have read the reviews from others with any complaints centering around the use of markers. I gave my boy/girl 2.5 year old twins the cupcake set to play with (everything but the markers) and they/we had hours of fun with this play set without the markers. When we decided to decorate the cupcakes with the markers, I just made sure that I had a plastic tablecloth out and play clothes on the kids and told them to decorate the cupcakes for me while I supervised/helped. It worked beautifully, and now the twins are back to playing with the cupcakes without the markers. I see the markers as a small bonus project to something that really doesn't need it. This is a perfect product to promote pretend play. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!!!! Thanks once again to this company for a wonderfully thought out play set!!!

Shame on me for not reading reviews before purchasing this toy. We have so many Melissa and Doug sets, and we love them all. Therefore I didn't hesitate to order this one, knowing my kids would love the pretend cupcakes! The cupcakes and velcro candles are adorable. My kids like playing with them and putting them in the cupcake pan. The cupcake papers are just like real ones, so as other reviews mentioned, they will probably need to be replaced eventually. They are cute though, and my kids love them! Now for the bad. The "icing" markers are made to go on plastic icing toppers for the cupcakes. They are dry erase, so kids can decorate them and redecorate them. These are NOT washable markers, not even bleach works to take the ink out of clothing!!! I was shocked that such a thing would come in a Melissa and Doug kids' toy! Needless to say, I have gotten rid of the markers and the kids now just play with the rest of the set, which we all love!

Melissa and Doug products are always a hit in my house! This play set is lots of fun - great quality! It can be mixed and matched several ways. My daughter especially loves "decorating" (drawing) the icing!
